Illinois Lawmakers Complete Fall Veto Session; Democratic Members Re-Elect Speaker Welch to Lead Chamber
SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois House adjourned on Thursday, marking the end to legislative session in 2024. During the two-week fall veto session, Democratic House members re-elected Speaker Emanuel “Chris” Welch to another two-year term as Speaker of the House.
“It is truly an honor, and I remain humbled that I get to continue being able to serve as Speaker of the Illinois House,” said Welch. “As we head into the 104th General Assembly, we must work collectively to better the lives of those who sent us to Springfield and to always remember that diversity is our strength, but our power comes from our unity.”
The legislature will reconvene the first week of January for the lame duck session. Inauguration will be on January 8th, 2025, kicking off the 104th General Assembly.
