Speaker Welch Hosts Third Annual Leadership Retreat

ROSEMONT, Ill. – House Speaker Emanuel ‘Chris’ Welch hosted his third annual leadership retreat for assistant leaders, deputy leaders, and whips of the House Democratic Caucus this week.

This retreat focused on “The Infinite Game” by Simon Sinek – a book about the power of long-term thinking and how to achieve success through teamwork. There was also an interactive presentation from the National Conference of State Legislatures, a bipartisan organization that provides training and development for lawmakers across the nation.

“I’m proud to say that my leadership team is one of the most diverse in our state’s history; we look like Illinois,” said Speaker Welch. “While diversity is certainly our strength, we know that our power comes from our unity. These retreats allow us the opportunity to build meaningful connections with one another and think deeply about our priorities for this session. This year’s retreat felt transformational, and I’m confident in our common vision for our caucus and the state of Illinois.”

“These leadership retreats give us an opportunity to strengthen our bonds and refocus our intentions as we head into another important legislative session,” said Majority Leader Robyn Gabel (D-Evanston). “Our work in Springfield requires a great deal of collaboration and open dialogue, and I feel confident that our House Democratic Leadership team is ready to deliver the best outcomes for the people of Illinois.”

“With each leadership retreat comes a newfound appreciation for every one of my colleagues that I have the pleasure to serve with,” said Speaker Pro Tempore and Chief Budgeteer Jehan Gordon-Booth (D-Peoria). “We are a diverse group of legislators from different parts of the state, but we all share a common purpose in making Illinois a better place to call home. We know that every spring session brings unique challenges, but these retreats help us foster the trust and mutual respect needed to get the work done.”

“I want to thank Speaker Welch for his continued commitment to creating safe spaces for our House Democratic Leadership team to strengthen our bond and learn more about each of our own lived experiences,” said Deputy Majority Leader Lisa Hernandez (D-Chicago). “We know how important it is to find common ground and work in collaboration with one another, and these retreats help us build the necessary foundation for a successful legislative session.”
