House Members Return to Springfield for Legislative Session Next Week

WESTCHESTER, Ill. – Members of the Illinois House of Representatives are returning to Springfield next week to begin work for the 2023 legislative session. Speaker Emanuel “Chris” Welch will begin his second term leading the House, surrounded by one of the most diverse Democratic Caucuses in Illinois’ history.

“We’ve made tremendous progress in my first two years as speaker and I intend to build on that success in this next term,” said Speaker Welch. “One of my top priorities continues to be fiscal responsibility. We’ve earned our state six credit upgrades while also investing in public safety, education, and quality health care. These are the results the people of this state expect from their elected officials.”

Representatives return to the Capitol in Springfield on Tuesday, Jan. 31st. This session, Democrats will have the largest supermajority since the Cutback Amendment, which abolished multi-member districts, was approved by voters in 1980. Welch and the members of his Democratic leadership team are looking to make child care and health care more affordable, invest in training and workforce development, and provide relief for families coping with rising costs.

“I’m eager to see what we can achieve together for communities across Illinois, by accomplishing what people sent Democrats to do and by working across the aisle with our Republican colleagues,” said Speaker Welch. “We’ve delivered on many promises – paying off our bill backlog, preserving a woman’s right to choose, banning assault weapons, protecting our climate, and more. But we know we have much more work to do, and we must continue to build a better, stronger Illinois for all.”
