Speaker Welch Hosts 10th Annual Back to School Health Fair

Hillside, Ill. – House Speaker Emanuel "Chris" Welch is hosting his 10th annual Back to School Health Fair on Saturday, July 30. The event will be held from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Proviso West High School in Hillside. Attendees can get a head start on the new school year with a variety of local service providers offering important health and wellness resources for children and families.

"I look forward to this event in my community every year because it's something the whole family can enjoy," said Speaker Welch. "As a father of two, I know the back-to-school season can be stressful, but this event can help lighten the load for parents while also allowing everyone to have a little fun."

The Health Fair will offer free school and sports physicals, free school supply kits to the first 200 families, and will also have free food, band performances and more.

Speaker Welch also wants to remind families and teachers about the upcoming school supply tax holiday that runs from August 5 until August 14. This 10-day period allows Illinoisans to purchase certain clothing and school-related items at a reduced sales tax rate. Qualifying items include shoes and clothing under $125 per item, as well as a wide array of school supplies. The school supplies are not subject to the $125 threshold. A full list of eligible items can be found here

"I know this year has been challenging for many families across this state due to record-high inflation and starting the new school year can be very expensive," said Speaker Welch. "I'm grateful our state finances are in the position to provide tax relief on everyday necessities like gas, groceries, and school supplies. Be sure to mark your calendars for the sales tax holiday to complete your back-to-school shopping."

This tax holiday also doubles the tax credit for teachers who purchase their own school supplies. In total, this sales tax holiday is expected to save consumers $50 million.
