Speaker Welch’s Annual Job Fair Provides Networking Opportunity and Free Vaccines

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Speaker of the House Emanuel “Chris” Welch held his 9th annual job fair on Saturday, connecting employers across the state with individuals looking for work opportunities. The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the 2020 event, but Speaker Welch was incredibly proud of this year’s event.

“I was thrilled to back with employers and job seekers in my community,” said Welch. “Every year this event is so special to me, because I love being able to help facilitate these tremendous networking opportunities, as well as give people the chance to get to know more about businesses in our state.”

Co-hosted by Bellwood Mayor Andrew Harvey, the job fair was held at Proviso Math and Science Academy. More than 30 vendors came out to the event ranging from local small businesses to state agencies. Trade unions were also in attendance looking specifically to allow people of color access to these important skilled trades. Attendees were able to network, submit their resume, and receive information about resources for those who may still be facing issues with unemployment or underemployment.

Walgreens was one of the corporate partners that participated in this year’s job fair. In addition to offering job opportunities, they also provided COVID-19 and flu vaccines for anyone at the event. With the ongoing pandemic and some employers requiring vaccination to keep Illinoisans safe, Speaker Welch made it a priority to provide the community with a convenient chance to get their shot.

“Science and our most trusted health experts tell us we end this pandemic by getting the life-saving vaccine,” said Welch. “We need to ensure people can get back to work, but also protect themselves and their family by doing so. I am so proud of the event we held this year and I cannot wait to see the success stories that come out of it.”
