Illinois’ Congressional Map Ensures Equitable Representation in Washington D.C.

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – House Speaker Emanuel “Chris” Welch applauded Governor JB Pritzker for signing the new U.S. House district map that preserves minority representation in Illinois’ delegation and reflects the diversity of the entire state.

“The map signed by Governor Pritzker this week provides the strongest possible representation for communities all across this state in Washington D.C.,” said Speaker Welch. “It’s the product of robust public input and gives a voice to our communities of interest.”

The district boundaries account for population changes in the state, including regions that saw the most population loss recorded by the 2020 U.S. Census. This map adheres to the Voting Rights Act that prohibits practices and procedures that discriminate on the basis of race, color or membership in a protected language minority group. It also adheres to the Illinois Voting Rights Act of 2011 that ensures maps are crafted in a way that preserves clusters of minority voters if they are of size or cohesion to exert collective electoral power.

"These maps align with the landmark Voting Rights Act and will ensure all communities are equitably represented in our congressional delegation,” said Governor JB Pritzker.

“A product of notable collaboration, we are pleased this map will include a second district of significant Latino representation,” said the Illinois House Latino Caucus. “This will be the first time in Illinois' history that the Latino community can influence two congressional districts.”
